AI-generated photos will soon look like the real thing, warns Instagram chief

AI generated images are becoming so realistic that they may soon fool everyone, warns Instagram chief Adam Mosseri.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) on social media is increasing day by day. In this regard, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, owned by Meta, has warned that AI-generated images and videos are getting better very quickly. They say that there may soon come a time when it will be very difficult to distinguish between an AI-generated image or video and a real image or video.

Speaking about the situation before 2026, Adam Mosseri said that if Instagram does not take into account how content is being created today, how it is being shared, and how people perceive it as true or false, then Instagram could face major risks.

Instagram was originally an app where people only shared photos and videos. Even today, photo and video content is very important on Instagram. That’s why AI generated images and videos play a big role in the creator economy, where digital creators and influences have a special place.

But according to Adam Mosseri, AI-generated images and content are advancing so rapidly that in the near future it will be almost impossible to distinguish between a real image taken with a camera and an image created with AI.

Realistic AI generated images that are hard to distinguish from real photos.

In a post containing 20 slides shared on December 31, the head of Instagram said that one of the big changes looking towards 2026 is that reality can be replicated very easily.

He added that in the short term, AI-generated photos and videos could become the biggest problem for Instagram. At the moment, people can distinguish between real and AI generated images, but over time, this distinction will become even more difficult to recognise.

Adam Mosseri also jokingly said that in the future, camera companies might put a special digital mark or signature on images to prove that the image is real, like some kind of JPEG signature.

How will Instagram meet this AI challenge?

According to Adam Mosseri, the focus on Instagram is now shifting from highly perfect and decorated posts to simple content that is personalized and shared through direct messages, or DMs.

As AI technology continues to evolve, Instagram and other social media platforms may also need to develop better tools for verification. This could include advanced AI detection systems that help users identify which images and videos are generated and which are authentic. By providing these tools, platforms can maintain trust and ensure that users are not misled by highly realistic AI content.

Experts also warn that the rise of AI-generated images may have broader implications beyond social media. News organizations, marketers, and online communities could face challenges in distinguishing between genuine and manipulated visuals. This shift highlights the importance of digital literacy and awareness, encouraging users to critically evaluate the content they see online.

Finally, the growth of AI-generated content is likely to change the way creators approach visual storytelling. While AI offers new creative possibilities, it also raises ethical questions about authenticity, ownership, and transparency. As Instagram navigates these challenges, creators may need to balance innovation with responsibility, ensuring that their content remains engaging without misleading their audience.

As Instagram and other platforms face the rise of hyper-realistic AI-generated images, the responsibility falls on both creators and users to stay vigilant. As Adam Mosseri himself warns, “Soon, it will be almost impossible to tell what is real and what is AI, understanding this distinction is key to maintaining trust online.” This new reality challenges everyone to adapt, innovate responsibly, and ensure that creativity does not come at the cost of authenticity.
