Google is introducing a new battery optimization feature in Google Photos to reduce background battery drain while keeping cloud backups active.
Google is testing a new feature in the Google pics designed to save battery life without turning off backups completely. The feature, seen in Google Photos version 7.59, adds a new toggle called “Optimise backup for battery life.”

The goal is to reduce the battery drain caused by frequent background syncing while still keeping photos and videos backed up to the cloud.
Until now, Google Photos’ backup options mainly focused on controlling data usage. Users could limit backups to Wi-Fi, prevent syncing over cellular data, or turn off cellular backups. But there haven’t been many options for managing battery usage. If Google Photos is constantly backing up, the only way to save battery has been to turn backups off completely—which many users don’t want to do.
How the new battery optimisation works
This new setting changes how Google Photos behaves while running in the background. When switched on, the app backs up photos and videos less often, unless the user is actively using the app. Background syncing is slowed down, which helps save battery life.
Essentially, this feature gives users a middle ground: backups continue, but without the constant battery drain caused by nonstop syncing.

There may be some trade-offs. Users might notice a delay in seeing newly taken photos appear on other devices or on the web. In some cases, backups may only start when the app is opened, rather than happening immediately in the background.
By reducing background activity, Google Photos can keep cloud backups active while using less battery. This could be especially useful for people who take lots of photos or frequently rely on Google Photos to store them safely without worrying about their phone battery running out.
