Israeli soldiers operating in Gaza as military confirms recovery of last Israeli hostage

Israeli army confirms recovery of last Gaza hostage’s body as ceasefire enters next phase.

The Israeli army has announced that it has recovered the body of the last Israeli hostage from Gaza. The hostage was identified as Ran Goveli.

After the recovery of the last hostage’s body, the next phase of the ceasefire agreement made in October last year is now expected to move forward. According to the Israeli army spokesperson, the National Center of Forensic Medicine has confirmed the identity of Ran Goveli, who was an Israeli police officer. With this, all Israeli hostages taken to Gaza have now been returned to Israel, either alive or dead.

Earlier, Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, said that they had shared full details about the possible location of the last hostage’s body with mediators. This was done so the body could be handed over to Israel under the US-brokered ceasefire agreement. The Israeli army also confirmed on Sunday evening that it was searching for the body in a cemetery in northern Gaza.

“The recovery of the last hostage marks a significant moment in the ongoing ceasefire process,” an Israeli military spokesperson said.

After the body was found, Hamas released a statement saying that this shows their commitment to the ceasefire agreement. Hamas said it will continue to follow all parts of the agreement, including supporting the national committee formed to manage Gaza and ensuring its success.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said on Sunday evening that Israel will reopen the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt after completing the military operation to recover the body of Master Sergeant Ran Goveli.
