Captive Wildlife Management Committee allows peaceful death for Lion suffering from incurable diseases.
The Captive Wildlife Management Committee has approved a decision to give a peaceful death to lions that are seriously ill and cannot be cured in government zoos across Punjab. The approval was granted during a committee meeting held at Lahore Zoo.
The meeting was chaired by Chief Wildlife Ranger Punjab, Mubeen Elahi, and attended by other committee members. During the session, officials presented details about several lions suffering from long-term, severe illnesses for which treatment is no longer possible.
While briefing the committee, Mubeen Elahi stated that under the law, not only big cats but also other wild animals can be given a peaceful death if they are in extreme pain or pose a danger to humans or other animals. He explained that there is a clear and defined legal procedure for carrying out euthanasia in such cases.

He further emphasized that due to the sensitive nature of the issue, formal approval from the Captive Wildlife Management Committee was obtained before taking any practical steps. The decision, he said, was made while keeping animal welfare and human responsibility in mind.

According to sources, in the first phase, 10 seriously ill lions have been identified for the process. Of these, seven are currently in Bahawalpur Zoo, three in Lahore Safari Zoo, and one in Lahore Zoo. The euthanasia process will be carried out step by step in accordance with legal guidelines.
Wildlife officials clarified that the primary purpose of this decision is to relieve animals from prolonged suffering and to better manage space in government zoos. Authorities also aim to send a clear message that lions are wild animals and should not be kept as pets.
