Tabish Hashmi slams government over Gul Plaza tragedy. He says if authorities can’t run PIA, Karachi should be handed to its people.
Host and social commentator Tabish Hashmi has strongly criticized the government in the wake of the Gul Plaza tragedy, stating that if the government believes it cannot run Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and therefore decided to sell it, then Karachi should be handed over as well.
He remarked that the people of Karachi, whether Pashtun, Baloch, Sindhi, Muhajir, Punjabi, or from any other community, would come together to “buy” their city and run it themselves.
Speaking on a private TV channel, Tabish Hashmi said that if the current method of running the city is considered governance, then it would be better for the citizens to take responsibility themselves. In a sarcastic tone, he added that they could manage it far better, as it would be difficult to perform worse than the present state of affairs.

He described the Gul Plaza incident not merely as an accident but as a failure of the system. According to him, the tragedy was the result of administrative negligence, poor oversight, and ineffective leadership. At least 26 people lost their lives in the incident, plunging the entire city into mourning. Tabish Hashmi pointed out that in many countries, officials morally resign after such tragedies, but no such culture exists in Pakistan.
He emphasized the need to establish a national standard under which officials voluntarily accept responsibility and resign in the event of major disasters or governmental failures. Without an effective accountability system, he warned, such incidents will continue to occur, and ordinary citizens will keep paying the price.
Highlighting the emotional significance of Gul Plaza, Tabish Hashmi said:
“It was not just a building but a source of livelihood and hope for many families.”
Its destruction did not merely bring down walls; it extinguished the lamps of dozens of homes. He questioned how long citizens would remain helpless, relying only on statements and promises after every tragedy.

He also raised concerns about the competence of the current government, suggesting that authorities appear incapable of handling the situation. If conditions persist, he warned, public trust will erode further. According to him, the time has come for serious reforms, clear identification of those responsible, and prioritizing the protection of citizens’ lives and property.
His remarks have sparked debate on social media, where many users have supported his stance while others have called it an emotional reaction. Nevertheless, the Gul Plaza tragedy has once again raised serious questions about urban administration and government performance.
