Weak shelters and damaged tents worsen the situation for nearly two million displaced people as a strong storm sweeps through Gaza.
GAZA: A very strong storm is affecting Gaza, making life extremely difficult for thousands of families. Many residents have no proper homes due to the ongoing conflict and currently live in temporary tents, most of which are damaged. The cold wind and heavy rain are intensifying their struggles.
Authorities reported that out of 135,000 tents, about 127,000 are unsafe, leaving almost everyone in the camps without proper shelter. Nearly two million people have been displaced by the war and now reside in temporary facilities that fail to provide adequate warmth or protection.

“Families are doing their best to survive, but the lack of proper shelter makes each night a struggle.”
A local reporter described the scene as heartbreaking, witnessing families huddled in broken tents, struggling to stay warm amidst rain and cold winds.
Many essential supplies, including tents, building materials, and heating fuel, are unable to reach the affected areas. Promised aid has been limited, with only a few trucks delivering support so far.
To survive, families cover their tents with plastic sheets, wear multiple layers while sleeping, and burn small items for warmth. The harsh winter has caused several buildings to collapse, resulting in at least 25 deaths since mid-December. Elderly individuals, children, and sick people are suffering the most.

“Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable, and immediate action is needed to protect them from cold and exposure.”

Authorities confirmed that 24 deaths were due to cold exposure, including 21 children. Hospitals are overwhelmed with young patients suffering from cold-related illnesses, and emergency calls are rising daily.
The weather office has forecasted extremely cold conditions in several areas, with Tuesday night and Wednesday morning expected to be the coldest.
Life in Gaza continues to be extremely challenging as families attempt to stay safe and warm in weak shelters while the storm persists.
